Abstract

ACUTE ORAL TOXICITY STUDY OF SIDDHA DRUG NARKARANTHAI LEGIUM IN FEMALE WISTAR RATS

ABSTRACT

In Siddha system of traditional medicine, Narkaranthai Legium (NKL) is an Herbal formulation. In the reference text of Brahma muni karukidai soothiram 380. It has been used for the treatment of psoriasis. Psoriasis is a long lasting autoimmune disease characterized by patches of abnormal skin. These skin patches are typically red, dry, itchy, and scaly. On people with darker skin the patches may be purple in colour. Psoriasis varies in severity from small, localized patches to complete body coverage. Siddha medicine NKL is a good remedy for the treatment of psoriasis. In this study the author has aimed to evaluate safety and efficacy of the trail drug NKL in female Wistar rats (Nulliparous, Non-Pregnant). Acute oral toxicity was performed as per organization for economic co-operation for the development (OECD) guideline 423 methods. Acute toxicity studies were carried out in 5 groups of 15 female Wistar rats, a dose of 500mg, 1000mg, 2000mg, 4000mg and 6000mg of NKL was administered and monitored for any toxicity effects. The trail medicine Narkaranthai legium was Non-toxic in acute toxicity study.
