In Ayurveda, both disease and patient are examined as a separate entity in order to understand the exact pathogenesis, so that the disease should be eliminated from the root. Patient examination included threefold examination of Vagbhata, Six-fold examination of Sushruta and three-fold with ten-fold examination of Charaka. Apart from these, eight-fold examination of yogratnakar is also mentioned. History taking is an integral part of the patient examination and followed by physical examination by using five senses. Inspection and palpation have been mentioned by all Acharya. All ancient authors have given utmost importance to clinical diagnosis prior to prescribing any treatment. Critical analyses of symptoms, physical examination and investigations by instruments have been mentioned in the process of clinical diagnosis making. In the context of diagnosis of pathogenesis of diseases two methodologies have been described. The first one is Nidanapanchaka and another one is shatkriyakala. By applying these principles, one can diagnose the diseases perfectly.
