Abstract

ANALYTICAL STUDY OF MERCURY AND SAATHILINGAM USED IN SIDDHA MEDICINE BY THE PROCESSES OF SUTHTHI

Dr. S. Sivashanmugarajah*

ABSTRACT

Mercury (Hg) and Saathilingam (Hgs), are extensively used in Siddha drugs from ancient time. These substances undergo Suththi process before using to prepare medicine. It is said that Suththi process minimize or remove the toxic effects of the drugs. The aim of this study was to identify chemical changes of Hg and HgS used in Siddha Medicine by Suththi processes. Altogether four Suththi processes were done. Laboratory test such as qualitative and quantitative analysis were done before and after suththi process. The atomic percentage of each element in X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) was identified by using reference standards. Different suththi processes were given different chemical changes. Atomic percentage of Hg in Saathilingam was reduced from 82% to 40% in one method. It was reduced from 82% to 62% in another method. Atomic percentage of Hg (rasam) was decreased from 100% to 99% in one of the suththi methods. In addition to suththi process, preparation methods, therapeutic doses, disease condition(severity of the diseases), age and strength of the patient, duration of drug uses and anupanam(vehicle) of the mercury and saathilingam containing drugs minimize the toxic effects. They should be studied in future.

Keywords: Mercury, Suththi process, Qualitative analysis, XFR method, Siddha Medicine.
