Abstract

COMPARATIVE STUDIES ON THE OCCURRENCE OF ANTIBIOTIC PRODUCING SOIL BACTERIA IN THE GANGETIC PLAIN AND MANGROVE REGION OF SUNDARBAN, WEST BENGAL, INDIA AND ASSESSMENT OF THEIR ANTAGONISTIC ACTIVITIES

Bikas Kumar Kundu* and Prasanta Kumar Sircar

ABSTRACT

During the present study, two phytogeographical regions were selected for the collection of soil samples, ten different stations of the Gangetic Plain (IG to XG) and seven different stations of Sundarban Mangrove area, West Bengal, India (IM to VIIM). Out of all isolates of the Gangetic Plain, five isolated microbes were found antagonistic whereas nine isolated microbes of Sundarban Mangrove area were found antagonistic. Out of all antagonistic microbes, three strains showed broad spectrum antimicrobial activity but two of them had a poor antimicrobial property against gram negative bacteria. Only one strain that was designated as IIIM-A showed remarkable potency to inhibit the growth of both gram positive and gram negative bacteria and found no inhibitory activity against fungal strains tested. The strain IIIM-A was selected for further studies.

Keywords: Soil, bacteria, Gangetic Plain, Mangrove soil, Sundarban, West Bengal, India, antagonism.
