Abstract

REVIEW OF JARA IN AYURVEDA W.S.R TO VATA DOSHA AND OJA KSHAYA

ABSTRACT

Jara is described as Swabhavik Vhyadhi in Ayurveda. It means aging is inevitable and natural process, the only difference is Every individual experiences it differently based on their lifestyle and immunity. As the age progresses there is unavoidable qualitative and quantitative depletion i.e Kshaya of each Dhatu, which ultimately results in aging. Hence it is important to know that what are those physiological changes that occur in body during aging. According to Ayurveda, there is a predominance of Vata Dosha in old age. While describing the Karmas of Tridosha, Acharya has mentioned Shoshana as one of the important Vata Karma. Vata Dosha decreases the compactness in Dhatus which leads to their depletion in quality and quantity. Oja Dhatu which is called as Sara (essense) of all Dhatus. Hence formation of Oja depends on the quality of Dhatus. As mentioned above during aging there is qualitative and quantitative depetion of Dhatus, which in terms affects formation of Oja. Oja Dhatu and aging are interdependent, i.e Oja Dhatu Kshaya occurs in old age and because of Oja Kshaya due to various causes, aging process progresses rapidly.
