The radioactive agents (radioisotopes and molecules labeled with radioisotopes) are used in the nuclear medical field called as radiopharmaceuticals. It is used in nuclear medicine for the diagnosis and therapy of many diseases. A variety of radiopharmaceuticals are being developed which have different targeting mechanisms, routes and forms of administration some are in the form of a simple salt or a complex form. It may exist as a solid, liquid; gas. Recently radiopharmaceutical is used for the treatment of metastatic bone pain, neuroendocrine and other tumours. It is an essential component of nuclear medicine practice. A modality where radiopharmaceuticals are administered to patients for diagnosing, managing and treating number of disease. If the radiopharmaceutical is taken up and handled by a pathological tissue or organ to a different extent than by healthy tissues, the scintigraphic image shows the localisation and status of a particular disease, such as a tumour, metastasis, or infection. The images can also allow the evaluation of, for example, the functional status of an organ, the density of receptors at a particular site, or the levels of metabolism in some tissues. This review article describes the production of radiopharmaceutical, types of radiation source used in healthcare, diagnostic imaging technique, therapeutic application as well as advantage and disadvantage of radiopharmaceuticals or radiation therapy. The main aim of this review article is to describe how radiation source or radiopharmaceuticals affect the healthcare system.

Keywords: Radiopharmaceuticals, radioactive, nuclear medicine, neuroendocrine, tumors, scintigraphic, radiation source.
