Background: Type II Diabetes is a form of Diabetes characterized by high blood sugar, Insulin resistance, and relative lack of insulin. Common symptoms include increased thirst, frequent urination, and unexplained weight loss. Symptoms may also include increased hunger, feeling tired, and sores that do not heal. Often symptoms come on slowly. Long-term complications from high blood sugar include heart disease, strokes, diabetic retinopathy which can result in blindness, kidney failure(Nephropathy), and poor blood flow in the limbs(Neuropathy) which may lead to amputations. Use of conventional Anti-diabetic drugs like Metformin leads to Gastrointestinal disturbances, Insulin therapy leads to weight gain & hypoglycemia. Ayurveda provides solution to the above by drugs which not only acts on increased blood glucose level but also improves quality of life without adverse effects. Here the present study aims to effectively manage the condition without increasing the present drug dosage and thereby minimizing the side effect and drug resistance. The present herbal formulation from classical Ayurvedic text is an attempt to revitalize beta cells in pancreas for effective insulin production and minimize the damage caused by Diabetes Mellitus. Objectives: This study aimed at the use of a Polyherbal combination (PANHEAL constituted by Amalaki (Emblica officinalis), Haridra(Curcuma longa), Ekanayakam(Salacia reticulata), Parantimoola (Ixora coccinea), Usira (vetiveria zizanoides), Kiratatikta (Andrographis paniculata), & Katuki (Picrorhiza kurroa) in Type II Diabetic subjects. Material and Methods: The study was an Open Clinical Trial. Thirty subjects fulfilling the Inclusion and Exclusion criteria were given PANHEAL powder 5gm BD in 75 ml warm water for a period of four months. Results: At the end of the study subjects showed statistically significant decrease in their blood glucose level (fasting & postprandial) and HbA1c. There were also significant results in subjective symptoms like Fatigue, Polyuria, Polydypsia, Polyphagia. Conclusion: PANHEAL Polyherbal formulation was significant in reducing blood glucose levels with subjective improvement in symptoms. There was no significant change in BMI. There was no reporting of any kind of adverse effects.
