ABSTRACT

Background: Dengue fever has become a global health problem predominantly affecting tropical countries like India. Thrombocytopenia is considered the hallmark. Presently, treatment is symptomatic and supportive. Transfusions may be administered in patients with profuse bleeding complications and a low platelet count however, this is controversial among physicians. Continued research on various mechanisms can lead to a more specific treatment. Oxidative stress may play a role in the pathophysiology of dengue fever, hence antioxidants like vitamin C can be an added benefit. Aim of Study: To assess the effect of vitamin C on platelet count in dengue fever patients. Methods: 130 patients with confirmed dengue fever were randomly assigned and treated for 7 days with standard care plus oral vitamin C (n=65) or standard care (n=65) only. Serum platelet counts were assessed daily from baseline to Day 7. Results: There was no statistical significance in age, gender and baseline investigations between the two groups. Mean platelet counts in the group receiving vitamin C was statistically significant (p-value<0.05) on Day 7 when compared to standard care only. Conclusion: In patients with dengue fever, a significant improvement in thrombocytopenia was seen in those patients administered a high dose of vitamin C. Hence, vitamin C may be an added benefit in dengue fever management.
