Abstract

COMMUNITY ACQUIRED PNEUMONIA IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES

Prof. Yousser Mohammad*

ABSTRACT

Globally, community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) occurs in 1-10%. No specific statistics are available for Low and Middle Income Countries (LMIC). Diagnosis of CAP is suspected clinically and confirmed by radiological imaging. Initial treatment by antibiotics is empirical. The decision to treat as outpatient or to hospitalize is based on a severity of illness score such as the CRB65. According to the recommendations of international guidelines (NICE, ERS/ATS), if the score is low (<2), hospitalization is not required, and the patient may be treated with oral amoxicillin, macrolides, or doxycycline. A higher CRB65 score (>2), is considered an indication for hospitalization. This requires treatment with co-amoxiclav or third generation cephalosporins ± macrolides or with quinolones.[1,2,3,4]
