Objective: To study the pattern of drug use in macrovascular disorders associated with diabetes. Methods: A hospital based observational study was carried out for a period of 3 months in general medicine and diabetology department of a multispecialty hospital. The data was obtained through patient data collection forms. Results: It can be observed that atorvastatin and aspirin were the most prescribed drugs other than the antidiabetic medications. These drugs were prescribed in the macrovascular complications such as cerebrovascular/ cardiovascular disorders coexisting with diabetes. Enalapril and furosemide were the most prescribed antihypertensive prescribed to control hypertension associated with diabetes. Insulin and metformin were the most antidiabetic medications prescribed in these patients. Conclusion: By assessing the various prescriptions, our study elucidates the fact that there is always a risk of developing a co-morbidity more often than not when a person is diagnosed with diabetes, especially disorders like hypertension and cardio/cerebrovascular disorders. Furthermore, we conclude that the role of a pharmacist at a clinical level is crucial for screening diabetic patients with comorbid conditions such as cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases.

Keywords: Diabetes, macrovascular disorders, cerebrovascular, cardiovascular, hypertension.
