Abstract

ACTION OF MANAHSHILADI LEPA IN KUSHTHA W.S.R. TO FUNGAL INFECTIONS- A REVIEW

ABSTRACT

Background: Rasa-aushadhi containing ingredients of both metallic and herbal origin in a nutshell, propagated and incorporated by ancient Acharya since 8th century are therapeutically considered the most suitable dosage forms. Manahshiladi Lepa is one such formulation composed of Manahshila, Hartala, Maricha, Sarshapa Taila and Arka Kshira, mentioned in Charaka Samhita in context of Kushtha or skin disorders. Skin diseases have been considered as global burden by JAMA Dermatology and found to be the fourth (non-fatal) cause of disability worldwide with superficial fungal infections the most common cause. In India, the prevalence of superficial fungal infection is 27.6%. Objective: To highlight the therapeutic excellence of Manahshiladi Lepa in Kushtha or skin disorders w.s.r.to fungal infections. Material and methods: The systemic review was conducted to evaluate the mechanism and effectiveness of Manahshiladi Lepa in skin disorders from various classical texts as well as journals. This formulation was referenced from Charaka Samhita. Results: In Manahshiladi Lepa, Rasadravya like Manahshila and Hartala in Shodhita or Bhasma form explained in Rasagrantha possess Krimighna properties. The combined effect of ingredients of Manahshiladi Lepa i.e., Katu Rasa, Tikshna Guna, Ushna Virya and Katu Vipaka, is supposed to act in skin diseases in which Vata and Kapha Dosha are predominant. Conclusion: The permuted combination of herbs and minerals in Manahshiladi Lepa can be helpful in combating skin diseases with predominance of Kapha and Vata Dosha.
