ABSTRACT

Background: Headache is one of the most available chronic disease which affect humans. However, headaches are not sufficiently studied as a cause of morbidity in the developing country like Bangladesh. Our study was conducted to study the etiological and clinical profile of chronic headache patients using the second edition of International Classification of Headache Disorders (ICHD-Z) in a tertiary care referral center. Methods: The study is a Hospital-based observational study carried out among 100 patients with complaints of headache for more than three months attending or admitted into medicine wards of President Abdul Hamid Medical College Hospital (PAHMCH) Karimgonj, Kishoregonj, Bangladesh, for a period of May 2018 to March 2019 Patients gone thorough clinical trial and psychiatric evaluation and clinical trials were done as and when required. Results: Amidst the 100 patients with chronic headache, chronic primary headache (82%) was the most available type, with Migraine found in 49% and tension-type headache (TTH) in 23%. and the secondary types, the most common headache is caused by the overuse of analgesics and post sinusitis. Chronic headaches were significantly more common in women and younger patients. Conclusions: More than 90% of headaches seen in practice are primary headaches, it is to be realized that matters have come a long way in the last decade, and these are now enough evidence to prove that primary headache is a genuine, potentially treatable biological problem. This study would help identify the significant gaps in headache care and strengthen existing health systems so that they better identify headache disorders.

Keywords: Chronic Headache, Primary Headache, Migraine, Tension-type Headache.
