Abstract

A CLINICAL STUDY ON IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME (PAKVASHAYAGATA VATA) AND ITS TREATMENT BY AN INDIGENOUS DRUG AMALTAS COMPOUND

ABSTRACT

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is one of the most commonly encountered chronic gastrointestinal disorders. It is motility disorder of gastrointestinal tract essentially of functional nature with definite psychosomatic basis. There is no single gastrointestinal disorder, described in Ayurveda similar to IBS. The most commonly encountered vata predominate disorders of the Mahasrotas such as Pakwashayagata vata, Kosthagata vata, Pureeshavrita vata, Udavarta and Samgrahagrani appears to have the nearest correlation with IBS. As Pakvashaya is the main seat of vata, majority of the symptoms of Pakvashyagata vata are similar to IBS. The present study has been carried out to establish the efficacy of the treatment. 45 patients of IBS were selected and randomly categorized into 3 groups consisting 15 patients in each group. Group 1: Amaltas compound, Group 2: Ispaghul husk and Group 3: placebo (corn flour). The duration of trial was 60 days with follow up of 15 days. The observations obtained are analyzed statistically and is observed that Amaltas compound was found to be more effective than Ispaghul husk and placebo.
