AYURVEDIC MANAGEMENT OF VATASTHILA (BENIGN PROSTATIC HYPERTROPHY): A CASE STUDY

ABSTRACT
Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy is a burning problem of elderly male,
usually seen in after 5th decade. It is commonly associated with
enlargement of prostate gland with lower urinary tract symptoms such
as frequent urination, urgency, nocturia, decreased & intermittent force
of stream and the sensation of incomplete bladder emptying etc. If left
untreated, BPH can be a progressive disease. Acharya Sushruta
explained in details about obstructive and irritative symptoms of
bladder under the heading of Mutraghata (Obstructive Uropathies).
Vatasthila is a variety of Mutraghata may be correlated with BPH on
the basis of similarity of symptoms. It is manifested due to aggravated
vata along with the vitiation of kapha and pitta dosha. The present case
study deals with a 68 years old male patient complaints of frequent
micturition >20 times/day, urgency, terminal dribbling, hesitancy, nocturia (>4 times)
associated with disturbed sleep. This case is diagnosed as Vatashtila (BPH) by investigations
along with sign and symptoms. Treatment was done for 4 months which showed good result.
