Kalyani D. Sakpal* and A. D. Pawar

ABSTRACT

Cancer is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. It usually treated with surgery, chemotherapy or radiation therapy, or both. But as these treatments bring many risks with it, researchers are always in search of newer, more effective but safer alternatives like herbal drug. Nagavalli (Piper betle Linn) has many medicinal uses and has been recommended in the ancient scriptures of Ayurveda. Betel leaf is in use from ancient times as a digestive edible in the form of tambula. In this study the anticancer activity of aqueous extract of Nagavalli (Piper betle Linn) leaves investigated against SCC 29B human oral cell line (in vitro). Cytotoxicity of plant extracts was determined by SRB assay. The compound with GI50 value is ≤ is considered to demonstrate activity in case of plant extracts in srb assay. But the obtained values for Piper betle Linn. extract was greater than 80μg/ml. Hence suggested the inactivation of the extract on SCC 29B human oral cell line at given dose levels.

Keywords: Nagavalli, Piper betle Linn., SRB assay, anticancer activity, SCC 29B cell line.
