Abstract

BLOOD GLUCOSE AND LIPID PROFILE OF ALLOXAN-INDUCED HYPERGLYCEMIC ALBINO RATS TREATED WITH AQUEOUS EXTRACT OF ALLIUM SATIVUM LEAF.

ABSTRACT

Elevated blood sugar and raised fatty acid, triglycerides and low density lipoprotein concentrations have been associated with diabetes mellitus. The present study focused on blood glucose and lipid profile of alloxan-induced hyperglycemic Albino rats treated with aqueous extract of Allium sativum leaf. Experimental study design was adopted for the study, where aqueous extract of A. sativum was obtained using standard methods. A total of 20 Albino male rats were grouped into 4 (5 rats in each group) according to the designated treatment at a dosedependent formulation. Alloxan was used to induce diabetes mellitus to the rats. Blood glucose levels and lipid profile of the rats were determined using standard methods and analyzed. ANOVA was to compare the groups while DUCAN was used to separate the means. The result revealed that the diabetic rats treated with aqueous extracts of A. sativum leaf at a dose 400 mg/kg and 800 mg/kg body weight had a gradual decrease in the blood glucose level compared to a sharp decrease when treated with antidiabetic medicine. However, there was significant difference (p < 0.05) in the HDL-C level of the rats on a dose-dependent effect. The LDL-C level of the rats was lowered when treated with aqueous extracts of A. sativum leaf including the total cholesterol and triglycerides. Therefore, with the increase HDL-C obtained in this study after treatment with aqueous extracts of A. sativum leaves, it can be deduced that A. sativum leaves could be used in reducing occurrences of cardiovascular disorders.
