Abstract

ANTIBACTERIAL AND PHYTOCHEMICAL ANALYSIS OF CUMINUM CYMINUM (CUMIN) AND ILLICIUM VERUM (STAR ANISE) AGAINST CLINICAL PATHOGENS

ABSTRACT

Spices and Herbs plays a vital role in traditional ayurvedic medicine to cure many types of diseases and infections. This paper mainly focuses on Cuminum cyminum (Cumin) and Illicium verum (Star Anise), in analyzing the Antibacterial activity and Qualitative Screening of Phytochemicals. The antibacterial activity was performed by Agar well diffusion method. Based on the results obtained, The Illicium verum (Star Anise) shows higher inhibitory activity against the clinical pathogens like Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus sp., Bacillus sp., Pseudomonas sp., when compared to Cuminum cyminum (Cumin). The Phytochemical screening shows the presence of Phytochemicals like Alkaloids, Glycosides, Steroids, Flavonoids, Tannins, Saponins, Resins and Phenols. The Phytochemicals has many medicinal values in treating the human infections and diseases. In ancient times, the extracts from the spices were used as an antibacterial and antifungal agents to treat bacterial and fungal infections.
