GC-MS AND HPTLC FINGERPRINTING OF BAUHINIA VARIEGATA LEAVES FOR ANTICANCER ACTIVITY

ABSTRACT
Background: Plant extracts usually contains thousands of different
constituents. The separation of the active components in medicinal
plant extracts provides solutions in studying their pharmacological
efficacy. B.variegata is a medicinal plant belongs to Caeselpiniaceae
family and it is used for the treatment of various diseases. Objective:
To explore the phytochemical constituents present in the leaves of
Bauhinia variegata Linn using GC-MS and HPTLC analysis. Method:
The shade-dried leaves of B.variegata were extracted with ethanol and
the crude ethanolic extract was subjected to column chromatography.
Active fractions were identified by testing the anticancer activity on
COLO 320 cell lines. The active fractions were further subjected to
GC-MS and HPTLC analysis to identify the bioactive components. Results: In GC-MS
analysis, 28 bioactive compounds and 17 bioactive compounds were identified in active
fraction I and active fraction II respectively. In HPTLC analysis, active fraction I showed the
presence of 12 compounds and active fraction II showed the presence of 10 components.
Further, the amount of various phytochemicals and nutrients were also determined.
Conclusion: The results of the present study justifies and enhances the traditional use of
B.variegata which possesses several known and unknown bioactive compounds, which may
be used as an effective source of drugs against various diseases.
