Abstract

CYCLODEXTRINS AND TERNARY COMPLEXES FOR SOLUBILITY ENHANCEMENT OF POORLY SOLUBLE DRUGS

Anita S. Kulkarni* and Dr. Remeth J. Dias

ABSTRACT

Cyclodextrins (CDs) are cyclic oligosaccharides composed of Dglucopyranose units. The important property of CDs is their ability to modify the physicochemical and biological characteristics of poorly water soluble drugs through the formation of drug-CD inclusion complexes. Although, CDs have been proved to be versatile carriers in pharmaceutical research, a large amount of CDs is frequently required to solubilize small amounts of a poorly water-soluble drug due to their lower complexation efficiency. The complexation efficiency can be improved by incorporation of small amounts of certain water-soluble auxiliary substances such as polymers, hydroxyl acids and / or amino acids to the complexation media to produce ternary complexes. This review addresses aspects regarding complexation of drugs with CDs and auxiliary substances in the formation of ternary complexes.

Keywords: Cyclodextrins, ?CD, HP?CD, Inclusion complexes, Solubility enhancement, Hydrophilic polymers.
