Abstract

A RETROSPECTIVE STUDY ON PRESCRIBING PATTERNS OF DRUG USAGE IN THE THERAPY OF PATIENT WITH OSTEOARTHRITIS

ABSTRACT

Background: Osteoarthritis (OA), also often called ‘degenerative joint
disease,’ is the most common form of arthritis. Prevalence of OA in
India is reported to be in the range of 17-60.6%. Prevalence increases
with age, so that about 11% of all women over the age of 60 years have
symptoms due to knee OA. Objectives: Retrospective study on
prescribing pattern of drug usage in the therapy of patients with
osteoarthritis. Methodology: This was a retrospective study conducted
in the Medical record department in a tertiary care hospital including
total of 614 patients. Results: A total of 614 patients were included in
the study and we found the females 453 (73.8%) were more than that
of the males 161 (26.2%) suffering with OA and the patients of age group between 61-70
years were found to be 48.9%. Majority of the patients are treated with propionic acid
derivatives (75.24%)subclass of NSAIDs and with the tablet Naproxen (30.36%) which is
belong to NSAIDs drugs, and between all the class of the drugs which is used for treatment of
OA, Analgesic (opioid) are mostly used. Conclusion: In our study, analysis of prescribed
pattern revealed that most of the patients were prescribed with propionic acid sub class of
NSAIDs and the mostly used drug is tablet Naproxen, and majority of the patients are treated
with the Analgesic (opioid) class of the drug and mostly OA knee is seen in the population
studied.
