Abstract

PHYTOCONSTITUENTS ESTIMATION OF LEPIDIUM SATIVUM L. SEED EXTRACT USING GC-MS SPECTROSCOPY

Akash, Sumitra Singh* and Shailendra Kumar Singh

ABSTRACT

The present study was undertaken to investigate the possible bioactive components of Lepidium sativum L. (Brassicaceae) seeds using gas chromatograpy-mass sprectroscopy (GC-MS) analysis. It is used as aperient, tonic, aphrodisiac, carminative, rubefacient, hiccough, tachyphylatic, oral contraceptive, diuretic, in treatment of diabetes, chronic liver enlargement and spleen diseases. GC-MS analysis of total alkaloidal extract from seeds has led to identification of fifteen compounds by comparison of their retention indices and mass spectra fragmentation patterns with those stored on the GC-MS computer library. The main constituents identified were methyl (Z)-5,11,14,17- eicosatetraenoate, guanosine, 3-butylindolizidine, dodecanamide, n-(2- hydroxyethyl), hexadecanoic acid, 2-hydroxy-1-(hydroxymethyl)ethyl ester, 1-(1-adamantyl)-3-(1-piperidinyl)-1-propanone, methyl alpha-d-glucopyranoside, nhexadecanoic acid, gamma.-tocopherol, squalene, stigmasterol and 3-beta-stigmast-5-en-3-ol. The extract was rich in methyl (Z)-5,11,14,17-eicosatetraenoate (10.24%), guanosine (9.29%), 3-butylindolizidine (4.80%), dodecanamide, n-(2-hydroxyethyl) (7.48%), hexadecanoic acid (5.33%), gamma.-tocopherol (5.04%); these are therapeutically active constituents, thus, the plant can be medicinally beneficial as an antioxidant, antimicrobial, antiinflamatory, antiparkinsonism, memory enhancement and its related disorders.

Keywords: Lepidium sativum, Phytoconstituents, Brassicaceae, GC-MS.
