Abstract

RECENT TRENDS IN ORAL DRUG DELIVERY-MOUTH DISSOLVING FORMULATION & EVALUATION TECHNOLOGY – A REVIEW ARTICLE

Saurabh Bhardwaj* and Pranshu Tangri

ABSTRACT

The tablet is the most widely used dosage form because of its convenience in terms of self-administration, compactness, and easy in manufacturing. However, geriatric and pediatric patients experience difficulty in swallowing conventional tablets, which leads to poor patient compliance. To overcome this weakness, scientists have developed innovative drug delivery systems known as "Mouth Dissolving Tablets". Mouth Dissolving Tablets are also known as quick dissolves, Mouth melts, Mouth dissolving, Mouth disintegrating, rapid-dissolve, or orally dissolving tablets. Their characteristic advantages such as administration, anywhere, anytime lead to their suitability to geriatric and pediatric patients. They are also suitable for the mentally ill, the bedridden, and patients who do not have easy access to water. The benefits, in terms of patient compliance, rapid onset of action, increased bioavailability, and good stability make these tablets popular as a dosage form of choice in the current market. These dosage forms are placed in the mouth, allowed to disperse or dissolve in the saliva. The release the drug as soon as they come in contact with the saliva, thus obviating the need for water during administration. The aim of this article is to review the progress of the evolving technologies and super disintegrating agents in the formulation, manufacturing and evaluation of these tablets.

Keywords: Mouth dissolving tablet, Conventional techniques, Rapid Disintegration, Evaluation Parameters.
