ANTI EPILEPTIC DRUGS: A REVIEW

Abstract Epilepsy is a central nervous system (neurological) disorder in which brain activity becomes abnormal, causing seizures or periods of unusual behavior, sensations, and sometimes loss of awareness. A “seizure” is a paroxysmal alteration of neurologic function caused by the excessive, hyper synchronous discharge of neurons in the brain. Considering 5 cases that I have studied all these patients are using long term medication for their seizures and these people have adverse effects during their first line treatment. Drugs used during first line are sodium valproate, carbamepazine, lamitrogen. Carbamepazine and lamitrogen are the drugs used in the treatment of focal seizures and these are prolonged used drugs. These drugs act on inhibiting the presynaptic release of excitatory amino acid neurotransmitters. Sodium valoprate.
