Abstract

Background: Hemoglobin (Hb) concentration defines the amount of the oxygen carrying protein in the blood, and is a diagnostic for anemia or polycythemia. POCT (Point of care diagnostic tests) will enable heath-care workers to provide more rapid and effective care. A Simple, rapid, and affordable POCT which require minimal or no electricity, a laboratory, or highly trained staff, are now available and widely used for several common conditions in low and middle-income countries. These POCT offer and unprecedented opportunity to reduce inequalities in health, and to help these countries achieve the health-related sustainable development goals. Thus an evaluation was performed between POCT device and a standard reference hematology analyzer in determining the Hb accuracy. Objective: To evaluate the accuracy of blood hemoglobin levels in HemoSpark Hemoglobin meter(POCT device) against Horiba Micro ES 60(automated hematology analyzer). This experiment was performed in Gayatri CRL laboratory which is NABL accredited. Materials and Methods: In this study, we have evaluated the performance of HemoSpark meter with Horiba Micro ES 60 automated hematology analyzer for the measurement of blood hemoglobin levels. Capillary and Venous blood samples of 588 patients were tested in Gayatri CRL laboratory between Oct 2020 to Jan 2021. The Venous blood samples were performed in HemoSpark hemoglobin meter and Horiba Micro ES 60 automated hematology analyzer for estimating the hemoglobin levels. Simultaneously, the respective patient capillary sample was tested in HemoSpark meter and recorded. Results: Hemoglobin level data accuracy of HemoSpark vs. Horiba Micro ES 60 was having a good correlation value of 0.96 in capillary samples and 0.98 in venous blood samples. Conclusion: Our Study of hemoglobin levels accuracy found that HemoSpark has a very good sensitivity and specificity. Which is considered suitable to be used as a screening tool for assessment in a mass population.
