EVALUATION OF HYPOLIPIDEMIC ACTIVITY OF POLYHERBAL FORMULATION
Pradeep Kumar Sharma, Anand Gupta, Radha Sharma*, K. Ganesan, Suman Jain
Abstract Hyperlipidemia is a common disorder in developed countries and is the major cause of coronary heart disease. Herbs have been used as a food and for medicinal purpose for centuries. Research interest has focused on various herbs that possess hypolipidemic effect that may be helpful adjunct in reducing the risks of CVD. In the present study, plants used for hypolipidemic activity were Achyranthus aspera & Murraya koenigii. Present study proved that Achyranthus aspera & Murraya koenigii are potent anti hyperlipidemic activity, anti hypertriglycerolemic drug lowering LDL, VLDL and increasing HDL levels. The extract formulation of Achyranthus aspera & Murraya koenigii has significant weight reduction property then compare to standard it shows less effect on diseased rat model. This was comparable to that of Standard drug Atorvastatin. Histopathological investigation of epididymal fat, white adipose tissue (WAT) showed an increase in diameter of adipocytes in cholesterol feed (High Cholesterol Diet) group which was absent in standard drug and extracts (alone and in combination). Oral administrations of the extracts in doses 1600 and 3200 mg/kg do not produce any significant changes in behaviours. In a single dose administration no adverse effects are observed for the Achyranthus aspera & Murraya koenigii indicating that the extracts are not toxic under the observable condition. The study shows that extracts of Achyranthus aspera & Murraya koenigii, alone or in combination are safe and can be used for their hypolipedemic activity. Keywords: Murraya koenigii, Achyranthus aspera, hypolipidemic activity, Polyherbal Capsule, Acute toxicity test. [Full Text Article] [Download Certificate] |
