Abstract

AN EXTENSIVE REVIEW ON OPTHALMIC IN SITU GELLING SYSTEM

K. Rajeshkumar* and G. Hariharaputhraayanar

.

Abstract

The current review on in situ gelling systems becomes one of the most popular and prominent. These eye drops require frequent instillation and cause lachrymal drainage, low corneal permeability leading to poor availability. One of the best possible alternatives to overcome demerits of eye drops is ophthalmic in situ gels which are developed in recent years by significant efforts. Ophthalmic in situ gelling solutions were developed by pH-triggered, temperature triggered and ion activated mechanisms using different polymers. Active ingredients to treat ocular disease such as Ciprofloxacin, Fluconazole, moxifloxacin, azithromycin and Ofloxacin can be formulated with the combination of Poloxamer 407 as polymer gelling agent and HPMC as viscosity enhancer to produce good quality in situ gel dosage forms. This review focused on definitions, types, advantages, disadvantages, polymers used, and suitable characteristics of polymers, including the outline of preparation of in situ gels and the evaluation.

Keywords: in situ gels, poloxomer407, moxifloxacin, in vitro in vivo evaluations, poloxamer, carbopol.
