CHRONIC HISTOPATHOLOGICAL CHANGES IN SELECTED TISSUES OF DANIO RERIO EXPOSED TO EFFLUENTS FROM LEATHER TANNING INDUSTRY
Sivakumar P.*, Kanagappan M. and Sam Manohar Das S.
Abstract In the present study the histopathological changes are observed in the gills, liver and muscles of Danio rerio exposed to 4.8ppm and 12.1ppm concentration of untreated raw tannery effluent. Degenerative histopathalogical alterations were seen in gills, liver and muscles due to chronic exposure of the fish, Danio rerio to different concentrations of raw tannery effluent for 90 days. More severe degenerating changes were observed in gills than muscles and liver. In the vital organs marked changes like degenerative and necrotic changes in epithelium of gill filament, hepatocytes with cytoplasmic vacuolation in liver and severe damage of muscle bundle were observed. These changes might be due to the various components of tannery effluent on Danio rerio. Hence, proper treatment of tannery effluent is highly recommended through this study. Keywords: Danio rerio, raw tannery effluent, histopathology, gill, liver, muscle. [Full Text Article] [Download Certificate] |
