IN-VITRO MEMBRANE STABILIZING ACTIVITY OF DIFFERENT EXTRACT OF BAHINIA TOMENTOSA (L.) LEAVES
V.Kalaiselvi, R.Vidhya*
Abstract Bahinia tomentosa leaves are important medicinal plant with severalethnomedicinal properties. In this study different extracts (aqueous, methanol and ethyl acetate) of leaves of B. tomentosa were screenedfor phytochemical analysis and membrane protection against humanerythrocytes (RBC). Phytochemical screening of the leaves of B.tomentosa showed the presence of phytosterols, glycosides, phenoliccompound, saponins, alkaloids, flavonoids and tannins as majorphytocompound present in all the extracts. To confirm the membranestabilizing/protection activity of B. tomentosa was observed byhypotonic saline and heat induced hemolytic method. The aqueousextract of B. tomentosa leaf showed very less hemolytic activity inhypotonic saline induced hemolysis when compared to other twoextracts. The maximum membrane protection of RBC was observed inthe aqueous extract of leaf of B. tomentosa at concentration 500μg/ml, which has beencompared to standard drug Diclofenac sodium (1mg/ml). In future recommend further invitro and in vivo studies to evaluate the clinical efficacy of B. tomentosa leaf extract fortreated various disease conditions. Keywords: Bahinia tomentosa, hemolytic activity, membrane stabilization, aqueous, methanol, ethyl acetate. [Full Text Article] [Download Certificate] |
