Abstract

AYURVEDIC INSIGHTS INTO FOOD-DRUG INTERACTIONS: BRIDGING AYURVEDIC CONCEPTS WITH MODERN PHARMACOLOGY

Dr. Venkatesh S.* and Dr. Seema Pradeep

.

Abstract

Food-drug interactions significantly impact drug efficacy and safety, altering pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties. While modern pharmacology extensively studies these interactions, Ayurveda has long incorporated dietary guidelines to optimize therapeutic outcomes. This paper explores Ayurvedic perspectives on food-drug interactions, emphasizing the concepts of Pathya (wholesome diet), Apathya (unwholesome diet), and Anupana (therapeutic adjuvant). Classical Ayurvedic texts outline dietary principles that align with modern pharmacokinetic insights, demonstrating Ayurveda's holistic approach to ensuring drug efficacy and minimizing adverse effects. Recent scientific studies validate Ayurvedic guidelines, highlighting the necessity of integrating traditional wisdom with modern pharmacological understanding. This review bridges Ayurvedic and contemporary perspectives, advocating for further research on fooddrug interactions in Ayurveda to enhance global healthcare safety and efficacy.

Keywords: Ayurveda, food-drug interactions, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, Pathya, Apathya, Anupana, integrative medicine.
