AYURVEDIC REVIEW OF DYSMENORRHEA WITH REFERENCE TO UDAVARTINI YONIVYAPAD
Dr. Rajshree Ganolia*, Dr. Meenakshi Mourya, Prof. (Dr.) B. Pushpalatha
Abstract Introduction: Dysmenorrhea is one of the most common menstrual disorders affecting women of reproductive age and often impairs daily functioning. Ayurveda explains this condition largely through Udavartini Yonivyapad, a Vatadominant disorder occurring due to improper diet, lifestyle irregularities, stress, and suppression of natural urges. Aggravated Apana Vata moves in a reverse direction, leading to painful and obstructed menstrual flow. Materials and Methods: Classical Ayurvedic texts were critically reviewed to identify descriptions correlating with dysmenorrhea. An extensive literature search was conducted using databases such as PubMed and Google Scholar with keywords including ―Udavartini Yonivyapad,‖ ―dysmenorrhea,‖ ―menstrual pain,‖ and ―Yoni Vyapada.‖ Discussion: Classical literature describes dysmenorrhea-like features under Vataja Artava Dushti, Vatala Yoni, and predominantly Udavartini Yonivyapad. The hallmark symptoms include difficulty in expelling menstrual blood, severe colicky pain relieved after menstruation begins, frothy or clotted bleeding, and pelvic discomfort closely matching primary dysmenorrhea. Management emphasizes Samprapti Vighatana through Vatapacifying measures such as Snehana, Swedana, Basti, internal medications (e.g., Pushyanug Churna, Shatavari Ghrita), dietary regulation, and supportive Yoga practices, all of which help restore normal Apana Vata function. Conclusion: The concept of Udavartini Yonivyapad provides a holistic Ayurvedic perspective on dysmenorrhea, offering effective management through correction of Vata vitiation and lifestyle modification.
