Abstract

A CRITICAL REVIEW ON THE CHRONOBIOLOGICAL SIGNIFICANCE OF RITUCHARYA IN THE 21ST CENTURY

Dr. Dinesh Yadav, Dr. Anant Krishna, Dr. Anjali Tiwari, Dr. Shahnuma Ansari, Dr. Diksha Soni

Abstract

Chronobiology has emerged as an important field of biomedical science that investigates the role of biological rhythms in regulating physiological, metabolic, and behavioral processes. Growing evidence indicates that disruption of circadian and seasonal rhythms contributes to the increasing prevalence of chronic lifestyle disorders, including metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular diseases, obesity, sleep disturbances, and impaired immune function. Ayurveda has long emphasized the importance of aligning human behavior with natural environmental cycles through the concept of Ritucharya, a seasonal regimen comprising specific dietary, lifestyle, and behavioral recommendations designed to maintain the balance of the Doshas and promote health. The principles of Ritucharya closely parallel modern chronobiological concepts by advocating seasonal adaptation to optimize physiological functions and prevent disease. However, despite its relevance, scientific evidence validating Ritucharya remains limited, and its application in the context of contemporary lifestyle changes, climate variability, and urbanization requires critical evaluation. This review examines the chronobiological significance of Ritucharya by exploring its conceptual relationship with modern chronobiology, evaluating the available scientific literature, identifying current research gaps, and discussing its potential role in evidence-based preventive and integrative healthcare. Integrating traditional Ayurvedic wisdom with advances in chronobiology may provide a valuable framework for developing season-oriented strategies to enhance health, resilience, and disease prevention in the 21st century.
