ASSESSMENT OF OVERWEIGHT AND OBESITY AMONG SCHOOL AND COLLEGE GOING ADOLESCENT’S STUDENTS OF LAKSHMIPUR DISTRICT, BANGLADESH

Abstract

WHO defines overweight and obesity as abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that poses a risk to health. It is a multifactorial disease, defined as a state of imbalance between calories ingested versus calories expended would lead to excessive or abnormal fat accumulation. Globally, overweight and obesity among adolescents are considered a major public health issue because of their contribution to the development of chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in adulthood. WHO (2013) considers childhood obesity as ―one of the most erious public health challenges of 21st century‖. A descriptive type of cross-sectional study was conducted in Lakshmipur district of Bangladesh from January 2024 to April 2024. The study population was students at respected school and colleges of Lakshmipur district. Data was collected based on GSHS Questionnaire. However, there is a relationship between physical inactivity with obesity and overweight. (p=0.048). Age is also associated with obesity and overweight. (P=0.019).
