Abstract

NEED OF AYURGENOMICS IN AYURVEDA: BRIDGING CLASSICAL WISDOM WITH PRECISION MEDICINE – A COMPREHENSIVE REVIEW

Dr. Pratiksha Umbardand, *Dr. Vijaya Nyahalse (Nagarale), Dr. Sneha Shinde

Abstract

Ayurveda advocates individualized healthcare through the concept of Prakruti (biological constitution), which determines an individual's physiological characteristics, disease susceptibility, therapeutic response, and overall health. Although this personalized approach has been practiced for centuries, its scientific validation has remained challenging in the era of evidence-based medicine. Recent advances in genomics, molecular biology, bioinformatics, and systems biology have led to the emergence of Ayurgenomics, an interdisciplinary field integrating classical Ayurvedic principles with modern genomic science to establish a molecular basis for personalized healthcare. Ayurgenomics explores the association between Prakruti phenotypes and genomic, epigenomic, transcriptomic, proteomic, metabolomic, and microbiome profiles to explain inter-individual variations in health and disease. This integration supports predictive, preventive, personalized, and participatory (P4) medicine by enabling early disease prediction, risk stratification, individualized therapeutic interventions, and optimized drug selection. The present review examines the conceptual framework, molecular basis, scientific evidence, clinical applications, and future prospects of Ayurgenomics. It highlights its role in validating Prakruti-based diagnosis, advancing pharmacogenomics and personalized Rasayana therapy, and strengthening precision healthcare. Despite challenges such as standardized phenotyping, large-scale genomic studies, bioinformatics, and ethical considerations, Ayurgenomics represents a promising approach for scientifically validating Ayurveda and integrating it into modern precision medicine.
