Abstract

CONCEPT OF VIRUDDHA AHARA IN CHARAKA SAMHITA (SU. 26/81-87) AND ITS ROLE AS A PRECURSOR TO AUTOIMMUNE AND ALLERGIC DISORDERS: A CRITICAL REVIEW

Dr. Arvind Kumar Niranjan M. D. (AYU.), Dr. Abhishek Shah*, Dr. Bijita Majumder

Abstract

Background: Viruddha Ahara (incompatible diet) is considered a critical causative factor for various disorders in Ayurveda. Charaka Samhita describes 18 types of Viruddha and states that its regular consumption leads to Shandhatva, Andhatva, Visarpa, Jalodara and even Mrityu. In modern era, there is an alarming rise in autoimmune and allergic disorders linked to dietary incompatibility, food additives and gut dysbiosis. Aim: To critically compile and analyze the concept of Viruddha Ahara in Charaka Samhita and to explore its pathogenetic role as a precursor to autoimmune and allergic disorders on the basis of modern immunology and gastroenterology. Materials and Methods: All references regarding Viruddha Ahara were collected from Charaka Samhita with Chakrapani commentary and Dalhana. Modern correlation was done by literature search on PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar (2015-2025) using keywords: food incompatibility, leaky gut, molecular mimicry, autoimmune disease, food allergy, Ama, gut microbiome. Results: Charaka's Viruddha Ahara leads to _Agnimandya_ and _Ama_ formation, _Ama_ acts as _Visha_ and _Ama Visha_ triggers _Dhatu Dushti_ and immune dysregulation. The 18 types of Viruddha can be mapped to modern mechanisms like gut barrier dysfunction, molecular mimicry, altered microbiome, and chronic low-grade inflammation, which are central to pathogenesis of diseases like Rheumatoid Arthritis, Psoriasis, Celiac Disease, Urticaria and Food Allergies. Conclusion: Viruddha Ahara is not merely a dietary error but an immunological trigger. Its avoidance, described as _Pathya_, serves as a primary preventive tool for autoimmune and allergic disorders.

Keywords: Viruddha Ahara, Charaka Samhita, Ama, Autoimmune, Allergy, Leaky Gut, Molecular Mimicry.
