Abstract

DEERGHAYU (LONGEVITY) INDICATORS IN AYURVED: A COMPREHENSIVE ANATOMICAL, PHYSIOLOGICAL, AND CONTEMPORARY BIOMEDICAL APPRAISAL

*Dr. Vinay Pareek, Prof. Jitendra Kumar Sharma

Abstract

Background: Human pursuit of healthy senescence and biological longevity (Deerghayu) constitutes one of the foundational goals of Ayurveda, conceptualized not merely as chronological survival, but as an optimal state of somatic, physiological, and psychic equilibrium (Dharma-Artha-Kama-Moksha-Arogyam). Classical treatises elucidate multi-systemic indicators of longevity spanning constitutional phenotypic traits (Prakriti), structural tissue excellence (Dhatu Sara), macro-morphological proportions (Anga-Pratyanga Lakshana), metabolic adequacy (Agni), and psycho-neuro-endocrine stability. Objectives: To comprehensively synthesize and critically appraise the classical indicators of Deerghayu from primary Ayurvedic literature (Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, Sharangadhara Samhita) through the lens of modern human anatomy (Rachana Sharir), physiological reserve (Kriya Sharir), developmental origins of adult disease (DOHaD), Allostatic load, and cellular-molecular biology. Methods: A systematic conceptual synthesis was conducted utilizing classical Ayurvedic compendia alongside peer-reviewed contemporary evidence on anthropometry, connective tissue integrity, metabolic rate, mitochondrial dynamics, and geroprotective rasayana therapeutics. Results: Ayurvedic markers of longevity delineate clear morphological, constitutional, and metabolic phenotypes. Anatomically, features such as deeply embedded neurovascular structures (Gudha Asthi-Sandhi-Sira-Snayu), expansive thoracic morphology (Vistrina Vaksha), bilateral somatic symmetry, and robust structural tissue essence (Mamsa, Asthi, and Majja Sara) correspond to resilient musculoskeletal architectures, preserved peak bone density, and reduced risks of premature frailty. Physiologically, Shleshmala (Kapha) constitution and balanced Agni reflect lower systemic allostatic expenditure, attenuated oxidative stress, and enhanced metabolic conservation. Contemporary parallels such as the Rate-of-Living Theory, peroxisome-mitochondrial respiration, carbon dioxide tolerance, and the regulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis validate these classical diagnostic observations. Conclusion: Ayurvedic predictors of Deerghayu offer a sophisticated, non-invasive, phenotype-based predictive framework that harmonizes structural embryological stability with metabolic resilience, providing an integrative paradigm for preventive geriatrics and personalized healthcare.
