Abstract

ROLE OF SHODHANA CHIKITSA IN THE MANAGEMENT OF VATARAKTA: AN AYURVEDIC REVIEW

Dr. Tanvi Jagdish Patil*, Dr. Abhijit Balkrushna Gaikwad, Dr. Jyoti Sheshrao Khandare

Abstract

Vatarakta, also termed Vatashonita in classical literature, is a distinctive disorder involving the simultaneous vitiation of Vata Dosha and Rakta Dhatu. The classical pathogenesis describes an interaction between aggravated Vata and vitiated Rakta, with obstruction of the normal movement of Vata by Rakta and subsequent aggravation of both factors. Clinically, the condition is described with pain, tenderness, burning, discoloration, swelling and functional disturbance, particularly in the extremities. Ayurveda recommends an individualized therapeutic approach according to Dosha predominance, disease stage, site, tissue involvement and strength of the patient. Shodhana Chikitsa forms an important component of this approach and includes Mridu Virechana, Basti and, in selected presentations, Raktamokshana. Snehana is described as a preparatory and therapeutic measure, while Basti receives particular emphasis in the classical management of Vatarakta. This review looks at these traditional methods and discusses how they apply to contemporary Ayurvedic practice. The available recent clinical literature is also taken into account, even though it is acknowledged that Vatarakta should not be automatically equated with gout and that current clinical studies remain heterogeneous. The review highlights the need for tailored practices and improved clinical trials that integrate standardized Ayurvedic evaluation with objective outcome measures.
