Abstract

PANCHAKARMA AND PREVENTIVE HEALTHCARE: AN AYURVEDIC APPROACH TO COMMUNITY WELLBEING

Dr. Ghanshyam Beniwal*, Dr. Rajeev Kumar Pandey, Dr. Divya Gupta

Abstract

Preventive healthcare is increasingly recognized as an essential component of modern health systems, particularly in the context of lifestyle-related disorders, chronic diseases, psychological stress and declining quality of life. Ayurveda, with its holistic understanding of health, emphasizes preservation of health in healthy individuals and prevention and management of disease in the diseased. Within this framework, Panchakarma occupies an important position as a specialized therapeutic approach aimed at maintaining physiological equilibrium and managing aggravated Doshas through appropriately selected procedures. Classical Ayurveda describes Shodhana therapies, including Vamana, Virechana, Basti and Nasya, as physician-supervised interventions selected according to an individual's constitution, disease status, strength, season and suitability. The preventive potential of Panchakarma should not be interpreted as routine ―detoxification‖ for every individual. Rather, it can be understood within the broader Ayurvedic framework of Dosha equilibrium, Agni, Srotas, appropriate diet, daily and seasonal regimens, and subsequent Rasayana and lifestyle measures. At the community level, Ayurveda can contribute through health education, dietary counselling, Dinacharya, Ritucharya, Prakriti-based lifestyle guidance and appropriately indicated Panchakarma services. Contemporary evidence suggests potential supportive roles for selected Ayurvedic interventions, while also highlighting the need for standardized protocols, safety monitoring and rigorous clinical research. Therefore, integrating classical knowledge with scientific evaluation can help develop safe, evidence-informed and community-oriented preventive healthcare models.
