EVALUATION OF ALKALINE PHOSPHATASE, TOTAL PROTEIN AND ALBUMIN CONCENTRATIONS IN CARPENTERS EXPOSED TO SAW DUST IN PORT HARCOURT METROPOLIS, NIGERIA.
*Kalio Ibiene Sarah, Ihueze Peace Chidinma and Joshua Marcella Tari
Abstract This study was carried out to determine alkaline phosphatase in carpenters expose to saw dust in Port Harcourt metropolis, Rivers State, Nigeria. A total of 83 subjects consisting of 46 carpenters, 12 timber wood sellers and 25 control subjects were recruited for the study. 5ml of venous blood was collected from ante cubita vein of subjects into heparinized anticoagulant bottles for analysis. Phenolphthalin colorimetric method was used to determine Alkaline prosphatase , Biuret method was used to determine total protein while Bromocresol Green method was used to determine Albumin. The result showed that mean + Standard deviation for Alkaline phosphatase was 30.50 + 5.8 Iu/l, Total protein 77.10 ± 6.08g/l and Albumin 42.26 ± 5.48g/l in carpenters expose to saw dust while in control the values are Alkaline phosphatase 27.2 ± 3.6 Iu/L, Total protein 73.52 ± 1.40g/l and Albumin 44.15 ± 0.30g/l .Alkaline phosphatase and Total protein were significantly higher in carpenter exposed to saw dust than in control. Thus revealed that exposure to saw dust is associated with increase Alkaline phosphatase and Total protein . Statistical analysis confirmed this significant increase of Alkaline phosphatase (p Keywords: Saw-dust, Carpenters, Alkaline Phosphatase, Total protein, Albumin, Pollutants.
