Abstract

Natural product have been an important resource for maintaining life for ages. Even today, natural products are becoming increasingly important as alternative medicines. The last few decades have been a resurgence of interest in the use of herbal products. The present study was designed to evaluate the alcohol percentage in prepared Draksha arishta and compare with three available market samples. Methodology: According to Ayurveda pharmacopeia draksha arishta was prepared. Three market samples were taken from gampaha siddhayurveda products, Ayurveda drug cooperation and wanamandrava manufactures. Electric ebulliometer was used to determine the alcohol percentage. Boiling points of samples were tested and the alcohol percentages were calculated by using the scale of the ebulliometer. Boiling points of three samples of prepared drksha arishta and each brand of draksha arishta were measured and recorded. That temperature readings were changed to percentage. Results: The mean ratio of three samples of alcohol content of prepared draksha arishta was 8.6%, this found to be under the limit specified by LEGAL STATUS OF ASU GOVERNMENT OF INDIA. Variation in alcohol content of draksha arishta was observed in different commercially available brands. Among this the Ayurveda drug cooperation has the lowest 7.25% and wanamandrava brand has 11.53% highest percentage. Conclusion: Study reveals that alcohol content of prepared draksha arishta was found to be under the limit specified by LEGAL STATUS OF ASU GOVERNMENT OF INDIA. Prepared draksha arishta alcohol percentage is 8.6%. Among all market brands of draksha arishta, Ayurveda drug cooperation has the lowest alcohol percentage (7.25%). If the arishta prepared according to the Ayurveda pharmacopeia, alcohol percentage will not exceed desirable value.
