Abstract

EVALUATION OF IRON DEFICIENCY BY SERUM FERRITIN ASSAY IN A POPULATION OF ANEMIC MOROCCAN PREGNANT WOMEN

Abstract

Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is the most common nutritional deficiency in any part of the world. It affects preferentially young children, as well as women of reproductive age, pregnant or nursing. In this study, we propose to evaluate the frequency of this deficiency in a population of 210 anemic pregnant women. Serum ferritin (SF) remains the first-line test to evaluate this deficiency, but its interpretation is sometimes difficult in the case of an inflammatory process. The majority of women of the survey had moderate anemia (63.8%) followed by mild anemia (35.7%) and severe anemia (0.5%). The results of serum ferritin made it possible to identify 76% of women deficient with a dominance of microcytic and hypochromic anemia. The advanced age of pregnancy, the interval between pregnancies less than 2 years, and the presence of iron deficiency anemia in previous pregnancies are significantly associated with the occurrence of iron deficiency anemia in the current pregnancy(p
