Abstract

HYDROXYCHLOROQUINE-INDUCED PIGMENTATION IN A G6PD DEFICIENT PATIENT: A CASE REPORT

Abstract

A 48-year-old Saudi gentleman, a known case of Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency. He was recently diagnosed with dermatomyositis. The decision was made to start him on steroids and Hydroxychloroquine. Few days later, the patient started observing abnormal greenish pigmentary changes in his hand skin. This incidental finding was reported to the treating physician who decided to discontinue Hydroxychloroquine and start him on a different type of medication. Soon afterward, the lesions disappeared completely. This case report briefly discusses G6PD deficiency as a possible cause behind these lesions and the mechanism behind them.
