A STUDY ON ANTI-PUTREFACTION PROPERTY OF DODONAE ANGUSTIFOLIA
J. K. Alphonsa Juliet Helina* and A. Peter Pascal Regis
Abstract The ethanolic extract of Dodonae angustifolia was used on carbon steel in acidic medium for anti-putrefaction study. The phyto constituents, antimicrobial activity were examined and GC-MS analyses were carried out for the plant extract. The anti-putrefaction property of Dodonae angustifolia was determined by weight loss method, for various concentrations of the extract with Zn2+ ion and in the presence of additives such as tartaric acid, citric acid and lactic acid in 0.5M HCl medium. The resistive film that protects the surface of the metal was confirmed by the electrochemical studies such as FT-IR, UV-Visible and fluorescence spectra. The film formation is confirmed by the surface morphology SEM analysis, which confirms the formation of complex between the metal cation, additive and the compounds present in the extract of Dodonae angustifolia.
