HEPATOPROTECTIVE ACTIVITY OF HYDRO- ALCOHOLIC EXTRACTS OF IRANIAN TEUCRIUM POLIUM
Parna Zahra, Mirzaee Ali
Abstract Introduction: Tecurium polium with antioxidative potential was using it in treatment of liver disease. High price of chemical drugs, side effects of synthetic drugs and tendency to return to natural treatments, increase the usage of herbal drugs. This study evaluates the hepatoprotective effect of tecurium polium extract on liver toxicity which induced by carbon tetrachloride, in rats. Material and methods: This laboratory experimental research was carried out on36 male wistar rats. Tecurium Polium hydroalchoholic extract (TPHE) was given with dosages of 250 and 500 mg/kg as treatment groups, daily, for 14 days. At the same time treatment groups and tetra chloride carbon group received, carbon tetra chloride in olive oil solution, with dosage of 1ml/kg, intra peritoneal, since third day, daily for 10 days, and in control groups such as olive oil and negative control injected with dosage of o.5ml/kg,intra peritoneal olive oil and distilled water respectively, daily for 10 days.Extact control rats received only500 mg/kg extract . Statistical data was carried out by analysis of variance (ANOVA). Findings: According to biochemical tests, tecurium polium extract at dose 250 and 500 mg / kg reduced damages, that induced by carbon tetrachloride, However level of liver enzyme was more than references value which reported by negative control. Conclusion: return of marker enzymes such as ALT, AST and ALK and protein towards a near-normalcy in treatment groups maybe due to protective potential of TPHE.
