Abstract
Clerodendrum paniculatum Linn. of Verbenaceae family is used for
the treatment of various diseases like asthma, typhoid, cancer and
jaundice. Phytochemical screening revealed the presence of alkaloids,
terpenoids, sterols, flavanoids, phenolics, carbohydrates and
glycosides. The investigation was undertaken to appraise the
antioxidant protection of different extracts of Clerodendrum
paniculatum Linn. using beta carotene bleaching assay and nitric oxide
radical scavenging assay. It was found that ethyl acetate extract has
good free radical scavenging activity than other extracts by both
methods. In these testing a significant correlation existed between
concentration of the extracts and percentage inhibition of free radicals.
The results clearly indicate that Clerodendrum paniculatum Linn. Is effective against free
radical mediated diseases.
