A STUDY OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE IN INFERTILE WOMEN IN EASTERN PART OF UTTAR PRADESH, INDIA

Abstract
Background: Infertility is defined as the failure to conceive after 12
months of unprotected regular sexual intercourse. infertility is a social
stigma in India. Women suffering from infertility had to suffer
domestic violence. This lead to emotional and social problems in the
family. Our aim was to study the prevalence of violence in infertile
women. Methods: This was cross-sectional study done on 250 infertile
women attending the Out patient department of SSH BHU Varanasi. A
questionnaire was made and their age, literacy and education status
noted and questions related to the domestic violence that is physical, verbal and emotional
violence were asked. This study was done from August 2016 to July 2017. Results: In our
study 62% patients were of age group 26-39 years. 96% of infertile women experienced
domestic violence. Violence was verbal abuse in (68%) and Physical violence (28%),
emotional violence (24%). Mother in law was responsible for abuse in 80% cases. Due to
domestic violence infertile women suffered mental depression (40%), unable to attend social
functions(56%). Conclusion: Maximum number of the infertile women experience domestic
violence in India. The mother in law and husband should be counseled properly. Women
empowerment should be done.
