EVALUVATING THE EFFECTS OF NECK EXERCISE ON POST THYROIDECTOMY PATIENTS- A PILOT STUDY

Abstract Background: The most vital hormone gland is the thyroid gland and it has an important role in the human growth and development. Thyroidectomy ends with discomfort symptoms in patients for their rest of their life, they try to live their life with discomfort in their neck. Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of neck exercises to reduce post-thyroidectomy symptoms for patients undergoing thyroid surgery. Methodology: Convenient sampling has been employed to select the patients who underwent thyroidectomy. After getting informed consent signed, a total of 5 volunteer patients who experienced a total thyroidectomy and were older than 50 years participated in the study. On the Post operative day 1, the stretching exercises were instructed. Discussion: Thyroidectomy is the commonly performed procedures worldwide and it represents the principal treatment modality for thyroid diseases. Complications following thyroid surgery are rare but their effects can persist as life -threatening. The majority of the studied patients were females which show that thyroid disorders were present among females more than males. Conclusion: Education and neck stretching exercises significantly improved the neck condition of patients in pain and disability of the neck. Keywords: Thyroidectomy, Neck Exercises, Rehabilitation.
