PRECLINICAL EVALUATION OF SAMUTHARA CHOORANAM – TOXICOLOGICAL AND PHARMACOLOGICAL STUDY (IMMUNOMODULATOR AND ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITY)

Abstract Siddha system of medicine is the oldest documented medical system which deals with the physical, psychological, social and spiritual well being of an individual. Here the drug "Samuthara chooranam" taken from the siddha text will expect to give good results on managing the autoimmune disorders. The primary purpose of this preclinical study is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of the drug which will help the medicine for widespread global acceptance. An acute and sub-acute toxicity study was performed as per OECD guideline-423 and no other significant changes were observed in animal models. The immunomodulator study was conducted in raw 264.7 cell line and proven to be a potent immunomodulator drug. The antioxidant study was determined by DPPH assay and hence proven to be a potent radical scavenging drug. The overall study results that the drug "Samuthara chooranam (SC)" has high efficacy and safety in preclinical assessment and expected to give best results on the management of autoimmune disorders in further clinical assessment.
