BRACHIAL NEURITIS VIS-A-VIS PITTAAVRUTA JANYA GRIVAHUNDANA - A SINGLE CASE STUDY’

Abstract
Grivahundana has been described as a samanya lakshana of vata
vyadhi. Acharya Chakrapani takes the meaning of grivahundana as the
Grivastambha.[1] While stambha means stiffness, rigidity, make stiff or
immovable. Thus grivahundana is the clinical entity in which the back
of the neck becomes stiff or rigid and the movements of the neck are
impaired. Brachial neuritis is a form of peripheral neuropathy that
affects the nerves going to the shoulder and hand. Pain, loss of function
etc. occurs in the brachial neuritis. Brachial neuritis also called as a-
Parsonage Turner Syndrome. Brachial neuritis is a rare syndrome of
unknown etiology. In general line of treatment of the pittavrita vata
vyadhi Ushna-sheeta treatment is given prime importance along with
upanaha. So, snehana, swedana and upanaha are useful in
grivahundana. For snehana chandanabalalaxadi oil and for upanaha, pradeha prepared out
of masha, shastishali, yashtimadhu, gokshura, Godugdha and khanda sharkara was used.
Which have snehana and brihana property. The results that were achieved in this case were
significant in terms of significant reduction in the duration of the suffering as pain and
stiffness were cured with in 7 days as compared to the several weeks to months in the
brachial neuritis management.
