PHARMACOGNOSTIC STANDARDISATION OF KAIYAN TAILAM AND ITS INGREDIENTS

Abstract Kaiyan tailam is a herbal preparation in Siddha system of medicine, and the ingredients of the formulation are Eclipta alba and Gingelly oil. Mainly, the tailam is used for hair growth as an external application. It is also used along with milk to treat cough with expectoration. The efficacy of any formulation depends on the genuineness of the raw materials used for the preparation. The present study aims to ensure the quality of Kaiyan tailam and its ingredients with respect to its botanical, physico-chemical and HPTLC fingerprinting aspects. Botanical study comprises of macroscopical and microscopical characters. Fingerprint analysis by HPTLC is one of the most powerful tools to link the botanical identity to the chemical constituent profile of the plant. The physico-chemical analysis of the tailam and its ingredients were carried out by following standard methods. The formulation was prepared by the method mentioned in Siddha Formulary of India Part I. The various analytical data generated for Kaiyan tailam and its ingredients may be considered as the standards of these drugs. All the results obtained from this study may be utilized for the overall quality control analysis of Kaiyan tailam.
