EFFECTIVENES OF SIDDHA MEDICINES AND VARMAM THERAPY FOR MANAGEMENT OF MOOTU KANNESAIVU PISAGAL (PRIMARY OSTEO ARTHRITIS)

Abstract

Siddha system of medicine is the ancient traditional medicine practicedall over Tamilnadu. Siddha system is bestowed with variousspecialities of few which are Varmam, Pranayamam, Yoga andKayakarpam. This systemhas a vast repository of internal and externalmedicines. Varmamis one among such therapies used to treat multipleailments, especially related to musculoskeletal and neurologicaldeficits. Varmamis the vital life energy points located in human bodyand was identified as 108 points by the Siddhars. Here theVarmamtreatment for Azhalkeelvaayu (Osteoarthritis), one of the typesof Keelvaayu mentioned in the Siddha Noinaadal book is evaluated ina sma l group of patients. Among the elderly knee Osteoarthritis is leading cause of chronicdisability in developed countries. Osteoarthritis (OA) is the second most commonrheumatologic problemand is most frequent joint disease with prevalence of 22% to 39% inIndia. A study was done on 30 clinicaly diagnosed patients of osteoarthritis (knee joint). Suchpatients who underwent varmamtherapy are observed and results are presented. The resultsshowed significant effect of Varmamtherapy for the management of Osteoarthritis which isevident fromthe p value (P=1).
